- Combination of black cohosh and St. John's wort for symptoms of menopause: In a double blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of 77 peri-menopausal women, black cohosh and St. John's wort significantly reduced menopausal symptoms by 76%. The primary menopausal symptom was hot flushes which were rated separately. The trial reported a significant drop in the hot flush score from 7.5 at baseline to 1.5 by twelve weeks (Figure One). The other symptoms relieved included night sweats, disturbed sleep, headaches and irritability.1

Warnings
In very rare cases, black cohosh has been associated with liver failure. If you are experiencing yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, dark urine, nausea, vomiting, unusual tiredness, weakness, stomach or abdominal pain, and/or loss of appetite, you should stop using this product and see your doctor. St John's wort affects the way many prescription medicines work, including the oral contraceptive pill. Consult your doctor.
