The blood brain barrier is a complex regulatory system that includes various efflux transport mechanisms to regulate GABA levels. There is a limited capacity of the CNS to retain excessive concentrations of GABA.
Practitioner Information
What is GABA?
GABA or gamma-aminobutyric acid is the most important inhibitory neurotransmitter and is widely distributed throughout the central nervous system (CNS)[1].Within the CNS glutamic acid, a non-essential amino acid is converted to GABA via glutamate decarboxylase and the co-factor pyridoxal 5’ phosphate (P5P). GABA is often referred to as the ‘calming’ neurotransmitter. Endogenous GABA plays a key role in neuronal inhibition to act as a ‘brake’ during times of runaway stress. GABA regulates CNS excitability via GABA receptors. These receptors are classified into three major groups (alpha, beta and gamma). Alpha, beta and gamma waves are key indicators of brain activity. Alpha waves are generated when an individual is relaxed, yet alert. In contrast, low amplitude beta waves increase in stressful situations and make mental concentration difficult. In general, a greater alpha-to-beta ratio is associated with a more relaxed and alert state. GABA activates greater alpha wave activity. In healthy individuals the CNS is capable of producing sufficient GABA but due to a variety of environmental or health reasons the levels can fall. Imbalances in GABA concentrations may be associated with increased nervousness and anxiety. The widely prescribed anti-anxiety medications target GABA activity.
About MD Nutritionals GABA Mood Assist
Stress & Mild Anxiety:
MD Nutritionals GABA Mood Assist may help relieve nervous tension, stress and mild anxiety.
One study investigated the effects of orally administrated PharmaGABA on alpha and beta waves of the CNS in healthy subjects as well as measuring salivary IgA levels during times of stress.
Based on the results 100mg of PharmaGABA led to a significant increase in alpha waves and a decrease in beta waves compared to the control group.
Secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA) has been suggested to play an important role in protecting the respiratory tract from infection.
Typically, during times of stress and anxiety salivary IgA levels drop. In this study subjects with acrophobia traversed a walking suspension bridge that spanned a 54 metre high canyon.
Salivary IgA levels decreased when subjects were given a placebo; however when they were given PharmaGABA salivary IgA levels were higher at the bridge end. The results demonstrated that PharmaGABA administration may increase IgA levels even in stressful conditions.
Insomnia:
Chronic insomnia is common and often associated with long term health problems such as obesity, hypertension and mood disorders. Insomnia peaks from 45-64 years of age and a second increase appears in people 85 and older.
Further, insomnia is especially common during peri-menopause and is strongly associated with the use of sleeping medications which can have adverse effects.
MD Nutritionals GABA Mood Assist may be considered a natural sleep aid to support the relief of insomnia.
MD Nutritionals GABA Mood Assist is non-addictive and does not result in daytime drowsiness.
What is PharmaGABA?
PharmaGABA is a naturally produced form of GABA that may deliver superior clinical results compared to synthetic forms. PharmaGABA is a highly bioactive and concentrated form of GABA.
It is made from glutamic acid which is produced from the fermentation process of lactobacillus hilgardii. This beneficial bacteria is normally used to ferment vegetables in the preparation of the traditional Korean dish known as kimchi.
GABA Mood Assist featuring PharmaGABA may help promote natural relaxation while assisting mental focus.
Dr. Michael T. Murray, ND who is widely regarded as an authority on natural medicine recommends PharmaGABA as a safe alternative for feelings of stress and anxiety.
PharmaGABA is a trademark of Pharma Foods International Co., Ltd.. (Japan)
New Study Results Released
Oral GABA effects on sleep and its absorption in humans
The results of a small randomized, single-blind, placebo -controlled crossover trial were recently published in the Journal of Food Science and Biotechnology.
The researchers demonstrated the effectiveness of oral natural GABA administration for shortened sleep latency and deep non-REM sleep.
Participants, classified as poor sleepers via the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Questionnaire (PSQI) were given natural GABA at a dose of 100mg in powder form or a placebo 30 minutes before they went to bed.
Results were measured via EEG recordings, Visual Analogue Scale Questionnaires (VAS) and PSQI. Natural GABA administration resulted in a 5 minute reduction in sleep latency (a 50% reduction). Natural GABA also significantly increased total non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep by 2.2%.
Blood GABA levels were also investigated after natural GABA administration. Natural GABA was absorbed quickly with elevations seen within blood after a period of 30 minutes. This was followed by a reduction in concentration. The outcome of these results correlates with the benefits of GABA administration in the early stages of sleep.
