Using Lactulose as a Laxative
Lactulose is not absorbed in the intestine like other forms of sugar, meaning it can travel through the digestive tract to the large intestine. When lactulose gets to the large bowel, it provides a food source for bacteria there, but also draws water to the intestine and stimulates the bowels as a laxative. Lactulose is an artificial FODMAP.
Lactulose is a form of sugar used medically in the digestive tract as a treatment for constipation (a laxative). Lactulose selectively feeds healthy bacteria and is considered a prebiotic.
Using lactulose for vaginal health
Lactulose can be used for vaginal health to selectively feed lactobacilli while actively starving pathogens.
Research has demonstrated that lactulose does not feed yeasts or bacterial vaginosis/vaginal dysbiosis-related microbes, making it an effective way to increase vaginal lactobacilli counts. Lactulose actively limits the growth of Candida albicans and Atopobium vaginae and does not affect (as in, does not limit or promote) the growth of Gardnerella vaginalis Prevotella bivia, or Mobiluncus curtisii.
Lactulose can also lower vaginal pH, getting the vagina back to a healthy pH of between 3.5 and 4.5. This acidity change is likely due to the extra activity of lactic-acid-producing bacteria, lactobacilli.
Using and Inserting Lactulose Vaginally
Within the Vagina the friendly Lactobacilli are responsible for maintaining vaginal health. This is due to two acids: Lactic acid and Hydrogen Peroxide (H202) which maintain an acidic environment that prevents infection and supports Lactobacilli colonies. These bacteria thrive on natural compounds expressed on the vaginal cells which they use as a source of fuel. The Lactose sugars in Lactulose act as a prebiotic and can help encourage healthy Lactobacillus levels vaginally.
Ingredients:
- Lactulose solution
- 1 large syringe available from Chemist or Organic Tampons
- Measuring cup
Method:
Insert the Lactulose into the vagina in either of the following ways:
- Fill the plastic syringe with 6ml of Lactulose solution. Lie down and insert the syringe into your vaginal opening and empty the syringe. Continue to lie down for 5 minutes. Have a pad or liner ready for when you get up as the fluid will drain out. Alternatively, do it in the bathroom with a clean towel handy. A liner afterwards is important as the Lactulose mixture can be a little sticky.
- Measure 6ml of Lactulose solution and syringe onto a tampon or dip the tampon into a measuring cup. Insert before the tampon expands. Leave the tampon in place for 4 hours or as directed.
Repeat the application daily for 4-7 days. Avoid sex during therapy.
