4. Alphabetical Reference of Nutritional Support

Formula Catch Phrase Key Benefits
Bovine Protein for Good Health A low reactive protein powder containing collagen peptides, providing the necessary amino acids for tissue repair.
Female Nutritional Support with Broccoli Ensuring that overall nutritional status is optimal pre-surgery may assist in improved recovery, and prevents nutritional deficiencies induced by antibiotics. Optimal doses of vitamins and minerals support energy production, healthy detoxification, cognitive function and to reduce stress. Broccoli sprout extract is a strong antioxidant that regulates healthy liver detoxification.
Gelatin Complete Joint Restore Powder A powdered blend that delivers hydrolysed gelatin (FORTIGEL), glucosamine and MSM with nutritional co-factors to support and strengthen joints, cartilage and connective tissue, minimise joint pain and inflammation.
Glutamine & Boswellia (BosPure Boswellia) for Intestinal  Integrity Glutamine, Boswellia and nutrients blend to manage the unique impact of gut micro-organisms (biofilm) on inflamed intestinal mucosa with prebiotic, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, supporting intestinal inflammation.
Herbal Laxative Traditional laxative and carminative herbs support bile flow and regular bowel activity. Varied doses serve to soften the stool and promote peristalsis by degrees to act as a laxative, or simply to tonify bowel motility, depending on requirements.
High Potency Anti-inflammatory Herbs Helpful for acute pain management with powerful anti-inflammatory standardised extracts including BCM-95 turmeric, BosPure® Boswellia, willow bark, ginger and quercetin to rapidly reduce inflammation.
Low Carb Protein Powder for Fat Loss A convenient delivery of high quality protein (soy and whey blend) with low carbohydrate. Protein supports thermogenesis and energy during and after significant weight loss, and is essential for bone strength, muscle mass maintenance, immunity and brain health.
Lactobacillus plantarum 299v An anti-inflammatory probiotic strain to reduce the signs and symptoms of IBS, to help manage IBD. The anti-inflammatory properties of 299v have also been shown to reduce systemic inflammation (hsCRP).
Men’s Multi with Milk Thistle Ensuring that overall nutritional status is optimal pre-surgery may assist in improved recovery and prevents nutritional deficiencies induced by antibiotics. An iron-free multivitamin/mineral designed to support optimal male health requirements. Chelated minerals maximise absorption and cellular uptake. Phytosterols support immune modulation. St Mary’s thistle helps maintain normal liver function, reducing the negative effects of anaesthetic.
MetaFibre and EpiCor for Gastrointestinal Health A prebiotic combination of digestion resistant starch with a proprietary yeast extract to promote the growth of beneficial flora, reduce intestinal inflammation and support healthy gut barrier function. Provide prebiotic activity for gut micrflora, and helps to normalise both constipation and diarrhoea.
PHGG and 299v for Functional GI Disorders, Including Constipation Lactobacillus plantarum 299v and partially hydrolysed guar gum (PHGG) is a unique prebiotic and probiotic combination for functional gut disorders; targeting resistant functional gastrointestinal symptoms with a focus on reducing constipation, bloating, abdominal pain and flatulence.
Milk Thistle and BCM-95 Turmeric for Liver Support  Plant extracts from Milk thistle, schizandra, BCM-95™ turmeric, green tea, pomegranate and broccoli are blended to potently support and balance all phases of detoxification and induce antioxidant protection, especially to enhance and protect liver function and all organs of detoxification to support the healthy clearance of anaesthesia.
Specialised Pro-Resolving Mediators SPMs are lipid mediators that promote resolution, reduce pain, encourage clearance of pathogens and mitigate pathological inflammation, without immunosuppression. SPMs regulate macrophage polarisation; triggering the switch from M1 (proinflammatory) to the M2 (anti-inflammatory) phenotype, therefore promoting resolution.
Strain specific probiotics for gut microbiota restoration and support Highly researched probiotic strains, Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LGG), Saccharomyces cerevisiae (boulardii), Bifidobacterium animalis ssp lactis (BB-12) have demonstrated the ability to disrupt pathogenic bacteria, protect commensal groups and encourage restoration in the event of disruption, enhance gastrointestinal mucosal integrity, and have a beneficial impact on gastrointestinal function.
S Boulardii and Bi-07 for Management of Dysbiosis S.boulardii with Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07 blend to address digestive dysbiosis, including pathogens and Candidiasis, whilst restoring commensal probiotics to establish a healthy environment.
Zinc and Vitamin C Powder Poor wound healing is a symptom of zinc deficiency. Replenishing zinc speeds recovery and vitamin C is necessary for connective tissue formation.

5. Supportive Lifestyle Programs

Metagenics Clinical Detoxification program A program working to support recovery whilst reducing toxicity (drugs and anaesthesia) or environmental toxicity help to establish effective recovery long term. This program incorporates anti-inflammatory dietary principles with a questionnaire to determine the most appropriate detox prescription.
Wellness and Healthy Ageing Program The Wellness diet includes adequate protein, fibre, essential fatty acids and nutrients in a low glycaemic load diet alongside balanced rest and exercise with stress management – all factors associated with health and healing and chronic disease prevention.

6. Diet and Lifestyle

Dietary and lifestyle guidelines that may assist post-surgery include the following:

  • Muscle wasting is a general consequence of surgery, due to trauma causing the body to utilise protein for energy. The Wellness and Healthy Ageing Program provides a protein rich diet, balanced with low glycaemic carbohydrates from fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains, and quality fats, making it ideal to support patients before and after surgical stress.
  • Encourage a nutrient dense, low glycaemic, phyto-chemical rich diet. A nutrient dense diet has been shown to be anti-inflammatory and supportive in tissue proliferation, repair and recovery.
  • Minimise stress as much as possible, as this reduces immune activity.
    • Ensure adequate, regular, and consistent amounts of sleep each night.
    • Relaxation techniques such as tai chi, yoga or meditation help to reduce the requirement of post-surgical pain management.
    • Establish a reasonable work and personal schedule.
    • Re-establish physical activity gradually.
  • Promotion of normal digestive processes, gut flora balance and proper elimination are fundamental.

7. Footnotes

[1] Ensuring patients maintain an omega 3 index above 8% is essential to SPM production. Omega-3 status can be evaluated/monitored using the Omega-3 Index Test (refer to pathology testing section). In the instance of deficiency, consider co-prescribing an omega-3 essential fatty acid supplement.

[2] Due to their anticoagulant properties, commencement of Specialised Pro-Resolving Mediators is advised three days post-surgery to minimise risk of bleeding events.
