Definition: Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time when a woman makes a significant nutritional investment in the development and health of her off-spring. Ideally, pregnancy follows a preconception care program and is maintained with optimal nutrient intake to lay the foundation for a healthy pregnancy and child.

Nutritional deficiencies during the critical periods of development from fertilisation through to infanthood are shown to have life-long effects, such as increasing their susceptibility to metabolic dysfunction, immune dysfunction (allergies, autoimmunity and infections) and behavioural disorders (anxiety, insomnia and ADD/ADHD).

The aim of this protocol is to provide guidelines for optimal maternal nutritional status for a healthy pregnancy and the long term benefit of both mother and child.

Aetiology / Risk factors: Pregnancy

Complications in pregnancy and foetal dvelopment may be induced by any or all of the following:

  • Poor diet and digestive function  leading to low nutritional status
  • Excessive or chronic stress
  • Pre-existing medical conditions – including autoimmunity, hormonal imbalances, etc
  • Environmental toxicity (including food toxins, pesticides, herbicides or heavy metals)
  • Dysbiosis and/or leaky gut

Signs and Symptoms: Pregnancy

Common signs and symptoms patients seek support in pregnancy include the following:
  • Fatigue, faintness, dizziness and/or light headedness
  • Anaemia
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, morning sickness)
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Frequent infections and/or allergies
  • Preeclampsia
  • Depression
  • Threatened miscarriage

Diet and Lifestyle: Pregnancy

  • The Wellness Lifestyle Program is designed to offer a nutritious low glycaemic load diet with adequate protein and healthy fats to support healthy pregnancy. The program also advises moderate exercise and stress management, all essential to maintaining a healthy body composition for the wellbeing of mother and child. Increase servings of fresh vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds to satiate the increased appetite of pregnancy
  • Strictly avoid alcohol and cigarette smoking, and reduce or avoid caffeine intake.
  • Eating regularly to maintain energy levels throughout the day and may prevent morning sickness.
  • Don’t overeat – large meals can drain energy. Instead of eating three big meals per day, try six mini-meals to spread your kilojoule intake more evenly. This will result in more constant blood sugar and insulin levels.
  • Eat iron rich foods – make sure diet includes iron rich foods such as lean red meat.
  • Stress management techniques, massage and a manageable work load are all essential considerations to a healthy pregnancy.

Alphabetical Reference of Nutritional Support

Formula Catch Phrase Key Benefits

B12/ Folate (5-MTHF) for Cellular Health

Methylating nutrients play critical roles in supporting a healthy pregnancy for mother and child. A vast body of evidence has accumulated over recent decades showing that folic acid, and more recently 5-MTHF supplementation, equally support healthy pregnancies and confer protection against NTDs and other pregnancy complications.

Bovine Protein for Good Health
Pea Protein for Good Health
Undenatured Whey Protein Isolate
Adequate nutritional protein is essential for tissue growth, repair and development. Additionally, a protein rich diet may decrease hunger and support satiety via supressing plasma ghrelin, stimulating cholecystokinin secretion and enhancing the effect of leptin. Furthermore, adequate protein intake assists in stabilising blood glucose levels, thereby improving glucose tolerance.

Choline is essential for the production of several compounds, including acetylcholine, choline phospholipids and betaine, which supports the structure of neurotransmitters, cellular membranes and neuronal networks, while facilitating cell division and enhancing methylation. Choline is associated with enhanced pregnancy outcomes in mothers and infants, in addition to promoting cognitive function.

Dandelion, Ginger and Meadowsweet for Healthy Digestion

Digestive herbal formula to Promotes digestive, pancreatic and hepatic digestive secretions via bitter and pungent activities to normalise gut motility (prokinetic), correct appetite, optimise assimilation of nutrients and enhance colonic detoxification and waste removal

Endurance and Rehydration Formula

May help replace essential electrolytes lost in the severe fluid loss experienced during diarrhoea and vomiting.

Enhanced Bioavailability Coenzyme Q10 150 mg

CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant that protects the mitochondria and supports energy production. CoQ10 supports fertilisation and implantation for a successful pregnancy

Herbal Support for Hyper HPA and Stress

An herbal blend designed to manage nervous disorders and restore balance during times of nervous tension and anxiety. Helps promote restful sleep and to relieve muscular tension.

High Purity, Low Reflux, Concentrated Fish Oil Liquid or Capsules

Omega 3 (EPA and DHA) supplementation during pregnancy is been shown to support neurological and immune development in children.

High Potency Vegetatian Iron with 5-MTHF

Blood volume in pregnancy increases by approximately 45%. Supplementing with iron may improve iron status during and after pregnancy. Iron diglycinate does not cause constipation. Folic acid helps to protect foetal development.

Hydroxyapatite Complex for Complete Bone Support

Highly absorbable calcium with added bone factors to contribute to bone, tooth, muscle and nerve formation. Rapid skeletal growth begins in the 2nd trimester.

Key Nutrients to Support Healthy Preconception, Pregnancy and Lactation

Nutrient availability throughout preconception, pregnancy and lactation significantly influences maternal and neonatal health outcomes, particularly in relation to zinc, iron, vitamin D, choline, iodine and folic acid. Nutritional adequacy supports foetal skeletal growth, neurodevelopment, effective neural tube closure, and healthy methylation, in addition to supporting maternal energy production.

Mental and Physical Energy Powder

A potent magnesium powder enriched with mitochondrial nutrients including N-acetyl carnitine for mental energy; tyrosine and iodine to support thyroid function and B vitamins, plus zinc and vitamin C for healthy adrenal function.

PHGG and 299v for Functional GI Disorders, Including Constipation

Lactobacillus plantarum 299v and partially hydrolysed guar gum (PHGG) is a unique prebiotic and probiotic combination for functional gut disorders; targeting resistant functional gastrointestinal symptoms with a focus on reducing constipation, bloating, abdominal pain and flatulence.

Rehmannia Complex for Nervous Exhaustion

Where there is anxiety with nervous exhaustion. Rehmannia and American ginseng calm and nourish the nervous system and adrenals. Lavender and hops are included to support reduce anxiety and exhaustion.

Strain Specific Probiotics for Pregnancy, Breastfeeding and Infant Health

Probiotics have been shown to influence both the maternal and infant gastrointestinal microbiota, and impact clinical outcomes. specific strains of probiotics such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LGG®), Bifidobacterium animalis ssp lactis (BB-12®), Bifidobacterium breve (M-16v) and Bifidobacterium longum (BB536), have been shown to reduce the risk of allergic based conditions such as eczema; as well as behavioural based diagnoses including attention deficit disorder (ADHD) and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD).

Vegan DHA and EPA

Omega-3 supplementation, particularly high concentrations of DHA and moderate EPA, has specific benefits for conditions necessitating increased DHA requirements, including pregnancy and lactation, foetal neuronal development, and healthy brain function, in addition to supporting inflammatory conditions and cardiovascular health.
