Directions: Metagenics N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)
Clinical Benefits: Metagenics N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)
- N-Acetyl cysteine promotes glutathione synthesis by donating sulfhydryl groups to support cysteine synthesis.5 Glutathione conjugation is a major phase II detoxification pathway responsible for making intermediate metabolites formed from phase I detoxification more water-soluble and therefore more easily excreted.6 N-Acetyl cysteine also enhances glutathione-S-transferase activity extracellularly to further support xenobiotic detoxification.7
- Heavy metal elimination is enhanced by N-Acetyl cysteine. This action is due to the thiol side chains of N-Acetyl cysteine binding metals to assist their removal from intracellular and extra cellular spaces. Studies have shown that N-Acetyl cysteine is capable of binding mercury, lead, and cadmium and copper.8
- N-Acetyl cysteine also has mucolytic properties, thereby assisting clearance of bronchial passages as shown in animal and human studies.9 N-Acetyl cysteine cleaves disulphide bonds that crosslink glycoproteins in mucous resulting in reduced mucous viscosity.10
