Clinical Benefits: Metagenics Glutagenics
Protective effect on gastrointestinal mucosa and gut integrity: Glutamine protects the integrity of the intestinal tract by reducing mucosal permeability and increasing secretory IgA (sIgA) secretion and therefore inhibiting the adherence and translocation of gram negative bacteria.5,9 In addition, glutamine and zinc exert action on the tight junctions of the intestines, regulating the junction integrity.10,11
Glutamine reduces mucosal permeability and regulates the PI3-Kinase/Akt pathway while zinc is involved in the organisation of tight junction and adherens junction proteins.9,5,10,11
Aloe vera has been used traditionally for its protective effects on the gastric mucosa. This is possibly due to its inhibition of the inflammatory mediators PGE2 and IL8.7

If you are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant, do not take vitamin A supplements without consulting your doctor or pharmacist.
Pregnancy: Avoid use in pregnancy.
Aloe: No increase in frequency of malformation or other harmful effects on the foetus from limited use in women. Evidence of increased foetal damage in animal studies exists, although the relevance to humans is unknown. Aloe products are best avoided during pregnancy and in those trying to conceive. Another source, although it did not state the part used, states ‘Reflex stimulation of uterine musculature may cause spontaneous abortion or premature birth if patients use aloe during the third trimester of pregnancy’. Therefore, avoid use in pregnancy.
Evidence states that there is no increased risk of harm to the foetus from limited use in women. However, traditional text states that Boswellia is contraindicated during pregnancy. A review by the Natural Standard Research Collaboration states ‘reports in Indian literature say that the resin from boswellia may be an emmenagogue and induce abortion’.
Breastfeeding: Appropriate for use.
Aloe: No risks found in humans although research is limited or unavailable.[348]
Vitamin D is safe when used in doses below the tolerable upper intake level (UL) of 4,000 IU per day.
Vitamin A is safe during breastfeeding when used in doses less than 10,000 IU per day but is possibly unsafe when used orally in excessive doses. The recommended daily intake of vitamin A in lactation is 3,666 IU (1,100IU) and the upper limit of vitamin A intake during lactation is 10,000 IU (3,000 mcg)
