SunActive Iron
SunActive Iron is a micronised, dispersible form of ferric pyrophosphate. Ferric phosphate is a water-insoluble iron compound often used to fortify infant cereals and drink powders, as it causes no adverse flavour or colour changes. However, in its normal size it has low solubility and low bioavailability. In a crossover study of 20 adult women, SunActive Iron was added to fortified infant cereal or fortified yogurt drink, and compared to ferrous sulfate. The micronised, dispersible form of ferric pyrophosphate had similar bioavailability as ferric sulfate. In addition, a study on micronised, dispersible ferric pyrophosphate found it to have low cytotoxicity.
Iron
Iron is a key mineral in the body, found mainly in the haemoglobin of red blood cells and the myoglobin of muscle cells.3 It is needed for the production of red blood cells and is involved in oxygen and carbon dioxide transportation. Iron is also important in the function of several enzymes for energy production and metabolism3 and is essential to the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.
Studies have shown that iron deficiency can cause cognitive impairment related to attention span, intelligence, and sensory perception.4 Iron deficiency can lead to iron deficiency anaemia which includes symptoms such as pallor, weakness, and becoming easily fatigued.
The people most at risk for iron deficiency are young women, pregnant or lactating women, anyone eating a vegetarian or vegan diet, and the elderly.5
Iron deficiency when pregnant has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes.5
During pregnancy, plasma volume and red cell mass expand due to dramatic increases in maternal red blood cell production. As a result of this expansion and to meet the needs of the fetus and placenta, the amount of iron that women need increases during pregnancy.
