toxins are an ever-growing issue in modern society. They are suspected of being key contributors to a number of health conditions. These include conditions affecting the nervous system, airways and skin as well as symptoms such as allergies, general malaise and anxiety. The sources of these environmental hazards are far and wide and as pollution increases exponentially so do their impact on the environment and human health.1

Management of Environmental Toxins

Humans have natural detoxication processes that eliminate the majority of environmental toxins.

Key Features and Benefits: Bioclinic Naturals DetoxClear

Toxins in the Environment

Environmental toxins are an ever-growing issue in modern society.

However, supporting detoxication is a continual process and depends on an individual’s health as this inuences their ability to detoxify and eliminate toxins.2

Toxins are expelled from the body through a variety of organ systems and supporting these can aid in detoxication, or reduce the damaging effects of environmental toxins:2

 • The liver is the primary organ for detoxifying lipophilic chemicals and metabolises and supports excretion of many potentially harmful environmental contaminants.2
 • The gastrointestinal (GI) system is the primary avenue by which the external environment, including toxins, antigens and xenobiotics interact with the body, and can potentially enter into circulation.2 Increasing the excretion of fat via stools has been shown to be an effective way of eliminating toxic load. 2
 • The kidneys are another important organ for toxin elimination.2
 • Antioxidant support is also important as environmental toxins increase the pro-oxidant load, escalating the risk of oxidative damage to cells, leading to greater risk of disease, both acute and chronic.2

Chemical overload in our environment and stresses on human bodily functions due to a number of pre-existing and current health conditions means that there may be a need to assist these detoxication systems.

Supports the Body’s Natural Detoxication

TrueBroc Broccoli Seed Extract

Broccoli sprouts are a rich source of the glucosinolate glucoraphanin and isothiocyanate, sulforaphane, a biologically active metabolite of glucoraphanin, is the compound in broccoli responsible for many of its health benets. More than 500 studies have been conducted on the mechanisms and biological activity of sulforaphane and its precursor, glucoraphanin.

Glucoraphanin, also referred to as sulforaphane glucosinolate (SGS), is the most potent, naturally-occurring inducer of phase 2 detoxication enzymes in the liver and is an indirect, long-acting antioxidant. In addition, sulforaphane possesses antiinammatory activity; it inhibits cytokine production in preclinical and clinical studies.4

TrueBroc is a high-quality broccoli extract that contains a high level of glucoraphanin.

Chlorella

Chlorella is a highly nutritive green unicellular alga that has been shown in trials to prevent the uptake, or aid in the detoxication, of several toxins. These include dioxins, heterocyclic amines and methylmercury.6-9

Liver detoxication support

Milk thistle

Milk thistle has been traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to promote healthy liver function and protect the liver. It is a well-researched herb with a long history of traditional use to promote liver function and bile ow, in fact it is one of the most well-researched plants for the treatment of liver dysfunction.
The active complex of milk thistle is a lipophilic extract from the seeds of the plant and is composed of three isomer avonolignans (silybin, silydianin, and silychristin) collectively known as silymarin. Silymarin acts as an antioxidant by reducing free radical production and lipid peroxidation.10

Antioxidant Support

Green Tea

Green tea has its major constituents, as polyphenols such as catechins.11,12 Catechins scavenge both hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, lipid free radicals and peroxyl radicals.13-15 Catechins also increase the level of endogenous antioxidants and thus add to their ability to protect against oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation.16 Green tea protects against lead and cadmium toxicity due to its active constituent, catechins.17 It reduces oxidative stress and regulates the deregulated pro-oxidant/ antioxidant ratio following lead treatment in animals.18,19 Green tea extract increased cell viability, decreased lipid peroxidation and maintained cell uidity in in vitro studies with HepG2 cells exposed to lead.18 Also, treatment with green tea extract has been reported to decrease blood lead levels and lead-induced neurotoxicity.20

Several studies demonstrate green tea to have protective properties against environmental pollutants that are widely used in industry and that can induce oxidative damage. These include paranonylphenol, deltamethrin (a synthetic insecticide), cadmium and nicotine (a volatile alkaloid that is the primary toxic component of cigarette smoking).21

Green tea has also been shown to protect against benzene-induced toxicity and oxidative stress in human research.22 In addition, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) from green tea may help to eliminate toxic load by inhibiting pancreatic lipase activity. This increases faecal fat excretion and thereby elimination of fat-soluble toxins.2
SunphenonTM green tea extract is highquality green tea with high amounts of polyphenols, and minimum processing (extraction via water infusion) and chemicals (no chloroform) used.

Quercetin

Quercetin (3,3’,4,5,7-pentahydroxyavone) is a naturally formed avonoid that scavenges free radicals31 and is a natural chelator of heavy metals.32 According to Tong et al. (2016), supplementing with diets enriched with quercetin and other avonoids, such as apples, onions, tea, ginkgo, and buckwheat, may contribute to removing free radicals and heavy metal ions in the body.29 Quercetin is also reported to be capable of scavenging free radicals induced by arsenic exposure when given either alone or in combination with a thiol chelator.32

Quercetin has low bioavailability and poor solubility. Using a liposomal formula that is cold water dispersible such as Quercetin CWD 90 with Lipisperse® technology increases bioavailiability.53

Chlorella and Spirulina

Chlorella and spirulina have been shown to have antioxidant properties. Chlorella is naturally rich in antioxidants including betacarotene, ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol and zeaxanthin, and indirectly activates antioxidant enzymes. Human research reported that chlorella supplementation increased plasma levels of vitamin C, alphatocopherol and improved antioxidant enzyme activity.5,50,51 Spirulina is also full of antioxidants and activates cellular antioxidant enzymes, inhibits lipid peroxidation and DNA damage, scavenges free radicals, and increases the activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase.52

Digestive Function Support

Glutamine

Glutamine has many roles in the intestine, including the regulation of enterocyte proliferation, maintenance of tight-junction proteins, modulation of inammatory pathways, such as NF-κB and STAT signaling, and protection against apoptosis and cellular stresses. This means glutamine is a key player in gastrointestinal repair, regeneration of intestinal mucosa and intestinal barrier integrity.

Glutamine also contributes to detoxication of ammonia and to systemic acid-base balance.

Experimental models suggest that a healthy intestinal barrier function may help to reduce intestinal absorption of toxic metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury and mitigate against their toxicity. Glutamine depletion may however result in increased intestinal permeability.33-37

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble micronutrient that plays numerous vital roles in the body. It is important for cell growth, communication and immune function. The role of vitamin A in the immune response, maintenance of mucosal cells and overall development is well accepted. Its role in gut integrity has also been shown in studies involving children with gut infections. Vitamin A’s specic function of maintenance of mucosal cell integrity makes it important for detoxication, as a healthy intestinal barrier may reduce absorption of some toxins.38-41

Supports Tissue Repair

Spirulina

Spirulina supports tissue repair because of its highly nutritive quality. A recent analysis on Spirulina platensis aqueous extract compounds revealed some more of its active compounds. These newly identied compounds have various activity in relation to wound healing from inhibition of pro-inammatory cytokines and specic genes to antioxidant, angiogenic and procoagulant actions.43-49 Tissue repair in the protection against toxin damage is essential to upholding GIT function and skin as a physical barrier, as well as to help x the potential damage to cells caused by environmental toxins and their metabolites.
