Purpose
Spectrumceuticals Microbiome Prebiotic powder is a non-flavoured pleasant tasting unique blend of kiwifruit extract prebiotic fibres to support intestinal health and bowel regularity.
- Powder is neutral flavoured, odourless and soluble for easy mixing
- Formulated for daily use and well tolerated
- Suitable for adults and children
- Sunfiber® PHGG is clinically tried and certified low FODMAP by Monash University. Tolerated by many SIBO patients.
Mechanism of action
Larch Arabinogalactans
Arabinogalactans have been shown to positively influence GIT health via a number of mechanisms
- Increase the growth of beneficial microflora, particularly Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Enterobacteriaceae.
- Inhibit the adherence of pathogenic micro-organisms to the gastrointestinal wall.
- Increases in Short Chain Fatty Acid (SCFA) production, particularly butyrate and proprionate.
- May assist in regulating immune system function. Larch arabinogalactans have been shown to have several immunological effects, including the ability to increase circulating peripheral monocytes.
- May assist with bile conjugation and therefore gastro-hepatic detoxification
Partially Hydrolysed Guar Gum (PHGG)
- Guar gum is a dietary fibre derived from an inner part of the guar seed of Cyamopsis tetragonolobus (guar plant) mainly composed of galactose and mannose.
- Considered to be a true bowel regulator. Research demonstrates its efficacy for constipation related disorders and has also been shown to improve stool consistency and reduce the duration of diarrhoeal episodes in both children and adults (however, this product is being aimed at the treatment of constipation).
- Research shows PHGG increases numbers of Roseburia, Lactobacilli, Bifidobacteria and other commensals in the GIT, contributing to GIT function and promoting bowel regularity.
Green kiwifruit powder (Actazin™)
Actazin™ is a non-GMO, freeze dried, kiwifruit powder from 100% NZ grown kiwifruit. Summary of key actions:
- Provides a natural source of fibre, polyphenols and enzymes
- Facilitates healthy gut microbiota modulation
- Helps gently facilitate laxation, increasing the number of daily/weekly bowel movements
- Supports protein digestion in the gut via the provision of the proteolytic enzyme – actinidin
Actazin™ improved gut motility by:
- Increasing mucus production
- Increasing smooth muscle relaxation
- Increasing intestinal transit time which aided faecal bulking and
- By reducing inflammation.
Actazin’s bioactive compounds affect gut motility as follows:
- Leucine increases the expression of the Mucin-2 gene which enhances mucus production in enterocytes
- Polyphenolic bioactive compound Luteolin enhances smooth muscle cell relaxation, consequently gut transit, via downregulation of protein kinase c – α (PKC- α).
- Short chain fatty acid (SCFA) propionate, a fermentation product of fibre from Actazin, increased expression of peptide YY (PYY) and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which play a significant role in delaying gastric emptying, increasing gut transit time and consequently affecting faecal bulking.
- Vitamin E, Vitamin A and Vitamin C, and the polyphenolic bioactive compound Epicatechin reduce inflammation by reducing oxidative stress biomarker reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the enterocytes.
- Vitamin C and Vitamin A reduce inflammation by lowering the amount of nitric oxide produced in the enterocytes.
Gold kiwifruit powder (Livaux™)
Gold kiwifruit powder from 100% NZ grown gold kiwifruit. Non-GMO and freeze dried.. Summary of key actions:
- Provides a natural source of fibre, polyphenols and enzyme
- Facilitates healthy gut microbiota modulation
- Helps gently facilitate laxation, increasing the number of daily/weekly bowel movements
Livaux™ improved gut motility by:
- Increasing mucus production
- Increasing intestinal transit time which aided faecal bulking
- Reducing inflammation
Livaux™ boosts levels of the Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (F. prau) by more than 100% (Blatchford et al., 2017). F. prau is one of the most abundant bacteria in the human gut. Low numbers have been associated with IBS, IBD (including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease) and coeliac disease.
Livaux™'s bioactive compounds affect gut motility as follows:
- Leucine increases the expression of the Mucin-2 gene which enhances mucus production in enterocytes.
- Polyphenolic bioactive compound Luteolin enhances smooth muscle cell relaxation, consequently gut transit, via downregulation of protein kinase c – α (PKC- α).
- Fibre in Livaux™ acts as an effective prebiotic for the gut microflora that converts the fibre into SCFA’s such as propionate.
- SCFA propionate, a fermentation product of prebiotic fibre from Livaux, increases expression of peptide YY (PYY) and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) which play a significant role in delaying gastric emptying, increasing gut transit time and consequently affecting faecal bulking.
