Definition of Cellulite

Cellulite is described as dimpling of skin with a lumpy appearance. Cellulite can cause an "orange peel" appearance to the skin. This is due to the protrusion of subcutaneous fat into the dermis creating an undulating dermal-subcutaneous fat junction adipose tissue.

The term cellulite originated in France more than 150 years ago and began appearing in English language publications in the late 1960s.

Between 85% and 98% of post-pubescent females display some degree of cellulite. It is prevalent in women of all races but is more common in Caucasian females than in Asian females.

There appears to be a hormonal component to its presentation. It is rarely seen in males. It is seen more commonly in males with androgen-deficient states such as Klinefelter's syndrome, hypogonadism, post-castration states and in those patients receiving oestrogen therapy for prostate cancer. The cellulite becomes more severe as the androgen deficiency worsens in these males.

Cellulite is not related to being overweight: average and underweight people also get cellulite.

While harmless, the dimpled appearance is a cause of concern for some people. Cellulite has been found to be indistinguishable from ordinary fat in every medical and scientific test. It is not proven whether any cosmetic lotion, massager or pills can reduce/increase cellulite versus ordinary fat.

Causes / Risk Factors for Cellulite

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Female, over 35
  •  Hormonal changes (pregnancy, puberty)

Signs and Symptoms of Cellulite

  • Dimpled appearance to skin, usually over thighs, buttocks and abdomen.
  • May be present in women of normal weight

Pathology Tests for Cellulite

Lab Tests  Laboratory tests almost never suggest the presence or cause of cellulite.

Diet and Lifestyle for Cellulite

  • Reduce pro-inflammatory foods in the diet including saturated fats (meats and dairy), refined foods, and sugar.
  • Include foods high in essential fatty acids such as oily fish and nuts / seeds.
  • Eat a minimally processed diet rich in antioxidants, phytonutrients and bioflavonoids.
  • Protein is essential for connective tissue support, and should be consumed regularly. Cellulite is caused by a loss of flexibility of the connective tissue surrounding the fat tissue.
  • Topical creams containing caffeine are thought to be beneficial, stimulating fat burning and reducing fluid accumulation in tissues
  • Foods that enhance peripheral circulation such as ginger, chilli, garlic and onions may be useful.
  • Endermologie—a deep mechanical massage that combines cylindrical rollers and suction to affect the skin's connective tissue, stimulate blood flow and lymphatic drainage, and trigger what the developers say is the body's natural system for eliminating fat from cells.

Medical Treatments for Cellulite

  •  There are no approved medical treatments for cellulite. It is not considered a disorder, but merely natural variation in fat deposits.

Experimental treatments include:

  • Two technologies are under development, using lasers or infra red light to stimulate the affected area, combined with mechanical massage.

HealthMasters Cellulite Detox Program

I recommend detoxification to help patients with cellulite.

Why Detoxification?

Toxins are substances that can interfere with the normal processes of the body through interference with enzymes, blockages of cellular transport mechanisms, oxidative damage, blockage of receptor sites, mimicking of hormones or neurotransmitters and/or blockage of nutrient absorption.

A major source of toxicity for most people is their digestive system. Foods, if not digested correctly, can become fuel for the growth of dysbiotic organisms. These organisms produce toxic chemicals, and when they die, fragments of their cell membranes can be absorbed into the blood stream and trigger an inflammatory response.

Also, the diet itself and environmental chemicals (pesticides, chemicals and toxic metals) all require neutralisation and detoxification.

Whilst the body has several powerful detoxification and neutralisation mechanisms to protect against toxins, these defence mechanisms may become overloaded or impaired, allowing toxins to interfere with normal physiology affecting any system.

Important notes:

  • Pregnancy: Detoxification should not be attempted during pregnancy. If you fall pregnant while doing a detox you should stop the program and contact your Practitioner. However, if you are planning to conceive, it is a very good idea for both partners to detoxify before pregnancy. Eggs and sperm take three to four months to develop, so you should aim to have completed your detox at least four months prior to conception.
  • Medication: Many prescription medications can be affected by the detoxification process. However, it is unusual that you will need to alter the dosage of the medication you are taking; you may just need to separate the doses away from your detox supplements. Your Practitioner will be able to advise you if the medication you are taking will be affected by your detox, and if this is the case, will provide recommendations on what to do. Be sure to inform your Practitioner of any medication you are taking before you start your detox.
  • Side effects: Occasionally people may experience adverse symptoms during a detoxification program, such as nausea, changes in bowel function or headaches. You should reduce the dose of your Natural Medicines and when symptoms subside go back to your previous dose. Generally symptoms are short-term and will resolve without need for intervention; however, you should discuss them with your Practitioner if they are severe or last more than a few days.
