Technical Information

Phosphatidylserine belongs to a class of fat-soluble compounds called phospholipids. It has been researched extensively over the last 30 years. Phospholipids are essential components of cell membranes (see Figure 1), with a high concentration found in the brain.1

Orthoplex Blue Phospholipid Complex contains phosphatidylserine which may help to support the brain and nervous system and support ageing brain function.

May help to support ageing brain function

Several studies have looked at the use of phosphatidylserine in elderly patients with age-related memory impairment.

One study compared the use of low-dose phosphatidylserine (100mg per day) with high-dose (300mg per day) and placebo over six months. Phosphatidylserine was found to have a positive effect on brain function in elderly subjects with memory impairment regardless of the dose.2

Other studies used a dosage of 300mg per day which in some circumstances can be recommended by healthcare practitioners. Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist, please consult your healthcare practitioner.

One trial administered almost 500 patients aged between 65 and 93 with phosphatidylserine for six months. They received either 300mg per day of phosphatidylserine or placebo. Patients were assessed prior to treatment and at three and six months. Positive outcomes for brain function including memory and learning were detected in the phosphatidylserine-treated group compared to placebo.3

Another study looked at the effect of 300mg per day of phosphatidylserine on healthy elderly people with age-associated memory impairment. Participants were given phosphatidylserine over12 weeks with testing conducted at the halfway point of six weeks. Memory improvements were noted after six weeks that were sustained at the 12-week study conclusion.
