The predominant microbial species in the urogenital tract is Lactobacilli, causing an acidic environment (lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide release, a pH of 3.0 – 4.5), which is unfavourable to pathogenic organisms.[1,2] Disruption to this innate ‘ecosystem’ may result in an increased risk in urinary tract infections, cystitis, bacterial vaginosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Clinical research of oral probiotic treatment with GR-1 and RC-14 shows adherence to the vaginal epithelium with improvement to the composition of vaginal microbiota.[3] A greater concentration of Lactobacilli was observed, compared to placebo (p<0.01).[4]  Another randomized, double blind, clinical study observed that 54% of women with a history of yeast vaginitis developed no symptoms in 28 days after taking GR-1 and RC-14 daily.[5]  Probiotic treatment was shown to restore balance within a vaginal microbiome in 61% of the treatment group compared to 26% of the placebo group (p<0.001) (Figure Two).[6]

 GutGard liquorice exerts antimicrobial actions against gram-positive bacteria, yeasts and fungi, can inhibit biofilm formation of bacteria and prevent yeast-hyphal transition.[7] Liquorice root also has demulcent activity which soothes genitourinary mucous membrane inflammation [8,9] and decreases excessive vaginal discharge.[10]

Vitamin C [11] and vitamin D [12] enhance local immune function, supporting protective mucosal barriers in the urogenital tract. [13]

No refrigeration required – Activ-Vial is Metagenics’ specialised packaging that has an in-built desiccant sleeve consisting of moisture absorbing polymers within the bottle wall, ensuring the probiotic strains remain at full strength, live and effective for the length of shelf life (when stored below 25°C).
