Nutrition for the nervous system. Phosphatidylserine is a fat soluble phospholipid that is a key building block of cellular membranes, particularly that of neurons1. Working in the cell membranes, phophatidylserine supports nerve cell functions such as signal transduction, cell-to-cell communication and cell regulation4. Clinical studies show that phosphatidylserine is an important brain nutrient that assists in maintaining healthy memory and cognition, which may deteriorate with the normal ageing process in healthy individuals2.
A double blind, placebo-controlled trial of 149 elderly patients tested the efficacy of 100 mg of phosphatidylserine taken three times daily on age associated memory impairment. The parameters tested included name face acquisition, name face delayed recall, and facial recognition. After 12 weeks of supplemenation, phosphatidylserine significantly improved all parameters tested compared to placebo.3
