Curcuma longa (turmeric) is a perennial, rhizomatous leafy plant (Curcuma longa) of the ginger (zingiberaceae) family that grows predominantly in tropical and subtropical Asian countries including India and China. Curcumin is the main biologically active curcuminoid constituent naturally occurring in turmeric roots and rhizomes that together with two curcuminoids (demethoxycurcumin and bis-demethoxycurcumin) and essential oils are responsible for the herb’s therapeutic effects. Other therapeutically relevant constituents in curcumin are turmerones and tetrahydrocurcumin (THC). Turmerones are essential oil constituents with properties that may also enhance the intestinal absorption of curcumin, while THC is a metabolite with significant antioxidant activity synthesized following the metabolism of curcumin by gastrointestinal bacteria. Every batch of Curcum-Evail tests for THC. Both turmeric and curcumin have been used extensively in traditional Chinese, Ayurvedic and Western herbal medicinal paradigms for many medicinal purposes including inflammatory conditions, pain, swelling, digestive and hepatic disturbances, wound healing, immune support and as an antioxidant.
In its raw state, curcumin is a lipophilic constituent and consequently has very low bioavailability, solubility, absorption and tissue distribution and is rapidly eliminated. Enabling curcumin’s full therapeutic potential requires appropriate modification to enhance such bioavailability and absorption while retaining its natural medicinal properties. Curcum-Evail™ is manufactured using the Designs for Health’s Evail™ technology, which is an all-natural formulation that improves the absorption and delivery of curcumin. This process uses a proprietary blend of sustainable MCT oils, Quillaja and Annatto Tocotrienols without the use of potentially harmful surfactants.
Joint health & Anti-inflammatory support
Osteoarthritis is a common degenerative joint condition defined by the breakdown of cartilage and bone with inflammation, pain and loss of mobility occurring within joints throughout the body. Consequently, clinical management of osteoarthritis mainly requires targeting inflammation to help alleviate associated mild pain and joint mobility symptoms. Curcumin has been shown to be effective for improving mild pain and mobility parameters in osteoarthritis subjects. This is attributed to curcumin’s significant modulation of several inflammatory mediators (inhibiting activation, translocation, gene expression and activity) including NF-kB and toll-like receptor-4 pathways, subsequently reducing the synthesis and activity of a broad range of inflammatory cytokines, protein kinases and adhesion molecules (e.g. tumour-necrosis factor-alpha, interleukins, phospholipase A2, cyclo-oxygenase-2, 5-lipooxygenase activity, thromboxane, prostaglandins, nitric oxide, collagenase, elastase, hyaluronidase and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, hs-C-reactive protein). Curcumin’s antioxidant mechanisms are also involved in supporting the management of osteoarthritic symptoms and support joint health.
Curcumin is known as a lipid-soluble antioxidant, reducing free radical damage to cells. Lipid soluble antioxidants work via several mechanisms; via directly scavenging and neutralising several forms of reactive oxygen, nitrogen and peroxyl radical species and via inducing endogenous antioxidant enzyme activity and levels (glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and catalase) and activates Nrf2 signalling pathways.
Combined with Designs for Health Evail Technology for improved absorption and delivery. Helps to relieve inflammation and may assist in relieving symptoms of mild arthritis and maintaining joint health. Provides antioxidant support and assists in maintaining general health and wellbeing.
