Testing
Taste 10mL (2 metric teaspoons) per test and hold in mouth for 10 seconds.
Evaluation: Responses to tasting 10.0 mL of the solution normally fall into one of the following four categories:
- Category 1: No specific taste or other sensation is noticed, even after the solution has been kept in the mouth for about 10 seconds.
- Category 2: No immediate taste is noted, but after a few seconds, a slight taste variously described as 'dry mineral', 'furry' or 'sweet' develops.
- Category 3: A definite, though not a strongly unpleasant taste is noted almost immediately and tends to intensify with time.
- Category 4: A strong and unpleasant taste is noted immediately.
The less a person tastes the solution, indicates poorer zinc status. If the taste response is in category 1 or 2, a zinc deficiency is indicated.
If the taste is in category 1 or 2 take 5.0 mL (1 metric teaspoon) three times daily until the taste description of category 3 or 4 is noted.
Repeat test to monitor zinc levels.
For zinc supplementation:
- Metagenics Zinc Drink 200 ml liquid
- Metagenics MetaZinc Tablets
- Metagenics Meta Zinc with Vitamin C Powder
Research
Researchers led by Dr. Derrick Bryce-Smith at Reading University in England discovered that a specially prepared solution of zinc sulphate, when taken orally, could be used to determine zinc status, utilizing the activity of the zinc-dependent enzyme, gustin, in saliva.
In their studies (published in the Lancet in 1985) they found that upon administration of 10 ml of the oral Zinc Taste Test solution, a lack of taste or a delayed taste perception indicated a zinc deficiency state. An immediate taste perception of the solution suggested that the person was adequately nourished with zinc.
Subsequent studies have demonstrated this test to be reliable and reproducible. It provides a simple, inexpensive screening method for determining the need for zinc. By using the oral Zinc Taste Test to determine the need for zinc, and retesting after 30 days of supplementation, one can not only determine zinc requirements, but also monitor the supplement program to be sure they are properly absorbing their zinc.
