• Enhances stress response: Several menstrual irregularities, including amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), have been positively associated with high levels of stress. Magnesium is an important regulator of the stress response, with subclinical deficiency found common in women associated with a range of conditions including PMS, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis. Magnesium supplemented alone, or in combination with vitamin B6, were more effective than placebo for reducing PMS symptoms of anxiety, depression and water retention.
• Supports thyroid function important for reproductive health: The menstrual cycle has a bidirectional relationship with thyroid function, via the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis. Iodine is essential to synthesise thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Female students found to have low to moderate iodine deficiency with dysmenorrhoea and abnormal uterine bleeding, improved menstrual symptoms after six months of iodine supplementation.
• Myo-inositol for healthy insulin signalling and ovarian function: Inositol is required for insulin signalling and is involved in oocyte maturation and transport. Myo-inositol supplementation of 2 grams daily is shown to significantly improve fasting glucose and insulin levels. Insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia occur in women with PCOS, contributing to hyperandrogenism and infrequent or failed ovulation. A study of sub-fertile PCOS women took myo-inositol at 2 grams daily. After six months 72% of participants had restored ovulation and 40% had achieved pregnancy.
• Delivering essential nutrients for phase II methylation of oestrogen metabolites: Adequate intake of vitamins B6 and B12 plus magnesium and folate are essential cofactors required for phase II detoxification pathways, methylation and glucuronidation. Both pathways are involved in conjugating and eliminating oestrogens and endocrine disruptors.
